Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Week celebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

Education Week 2018 - Today's schools creating tomorrow's world

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools livestreamed on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," Mr Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," Mr Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

For more information, read the media release by the Premier and Minister. The new policy and implementation guidelines (PDF 116.83KB) are available on the department's website.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Each public school decides on its school uniform in formal consultation with students, school staff, parents and the school community.

	In the Fields of Flanders

With a badge of courage and a head held high

One word was said to the loved one, goodbye.

Hearts full of doubt not knowing their adventure,

Slowly unravelling the thread of their future.

A soldier holds a cross up, and then to his chest,

And runs with his gun praying for the best.

A letter gets delivered to a soldier family,

They all stand around while his wife opens it carefully.

He tells them how he misses them so,

And how the days pass by very slow.

Most of the soldiers don't get a chance to write,

They are too worried they will be shot tonight.

No colour in the soldiers' lives any more,

Who could bear that terrible war.

A gunshot was heard then an ear piercing scream,

One more down, another soul would gleam.

As the poppies grew taller and redder on the field,

The men would fight until a paper was revealed .

If the soldiers knew what was about to happen,

Would they make sure they were cherished and never forgotten.

In Flanders Fields a war begun,

In Flanders Fields a war was done.

Last Friday, Tom and Luci represented our school at the Regional Athletics Carnival at Glendale. This is a great achievement by both students. Luci did particularly well, coming equal second in the Senior Girls High Jump, jumping a personal best of 1.35 m. It has still to be confirmed, but it looks like she has now qualified for the State Athletics Carnival—a wonderful achievement. Well done Luci!

Multicultural Public Speaking - Regional Final

Congratulations to Asher who won the Regional Final of the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition, following in the footsteps of his sister Luka who won last year. It is certainly some achievement that two siblings from such a small school as Iona have won this very competitive competition, two years in a row. The State Final will be held in Sydney in early November. We will be asking for some expression of interest from children who wish to attend the state final in the near future.

Footy Colours Day will be held on Friday 6th September 2013 and is the one day in September that you can help fight cancer and change lives.

Thousands of Australians unite and don their favourite football team's colours, be it AFL, NRL, Rugby Union or Soccer– to help raise money for children living with cancer.

Children are to wear their football team's colours all day– jerseys, scarves, beanies or anything else you have – and make a donation to the Fight Cancer Foundation.

On Friday 23rd August (next week) we are having a "character dressup" parade to celebrate Book Week. Students need to wear school uniform to school, but bring a costume to change into for the parade which starts at 2:00pm. For the parade, each child is asked to dress as a character they know from a book. Please come along and share in the fun of celebrating Book Week. We are also having a book fair where families will be able to purchase a book (or two) to celebrate Book Week. The books will be supplied by McDonalds Bookshop in Maitland.

Debating & Public Speaking

Our School Debating team had another success last Monday, defeating Largs P.S. in an energetic debate about city and country life. We successfully argued that city life is better (fancy that!) Our team was: Emma, Asher and Luci B. (with Harry team advisor). They have certainly carried on the tradition developed over the last couple of years, demonstrating fine debating skills.

Our Public Speakers also represented our school wonderfully well this week. So far Shyla and Ty (Stage 2) and Tilly (Early Stage 1) have progressed through to the Zone Final of the Hunter/Central Coast Public Speaking Competition. As we also have Asher in the Regional Final of the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition, we certainly have some very good talkers at our school!! I would like to congratulate each child who has represented our school at the competition this week—it is gratifying to know we have so many children willing to have a go.

Last Friday we thoroughly enjoyed our excursion to the Maitland Art Gallery and the historical walk around Maitland. As we told the children upon our return, they represented our school wonderfully—that's why we enjoy taking our students on these sort of outings! The children (and Mrs Murphy) did an amazing job last Friday, organising and presenting all the activities. It was wonderfully successful, raising almost $500 for this cause. It was a great way to raise awareness of our African Aid appeal as well as raising money for the building of their school. It was also a wonderful opportunity for the leaders to show their great leadership skills. We were very proud of them. A special thank you to the parents who supported their children in their leadership roles.

Our school debating team debated against Gresford Public School in the final of the "Valler, Small School Competition" today. The team was Drew, Lizzie, Luka; Raeshel (team advisor), Neve and Charlie (supporting team members). Both teams performed brilliantly in the final, displaying all the skills debating teams require. Our team successfully defended their title, winning the final. Well done team! We're very proud of you!

Presentation Night

Next Wednesday is our annual School Presentation night being held in the Woodville Hall starting at 6.30 pm. Children are expected to wear their school uniform for the formal evening. Those children in 2-6 also need to bring their outfits for the school musical.

We would also like everyone to bring along a small plate of food / nibblies to the hall so we can enjoy some supper together. There will be coffee / tea facilities available.

Our P & C will be able to supply some soft drink cans, but if anyone would like to, they are most welcome to bring their own for their family.

	* Very Important Information*

As is our traditional practice, at the end of the evening, we will also be having a visit from a jolly old man in a red suit. Parents are asked to supply a gift ($15.00 value maximum), for their own children, to be placed under the Christmas tree for our special visitor to hand out to each child. These can be secreted with Mrs Mahony or a teacher before the night.

	Christmas Hamper:

We need some food for our hamper!

P & C has once again provided a collection basket for contributions to our "Christmas Hamper" which is generally presented to the Salvation Army each year. The basket will be placed in the entry foyer of the Admin area where it will be convenient to receive your most welcome donation. Our hamper is currently in serious need of donations in the next few days!

They have been practising since the beginning of the year under the instruction of Mrs Helen Tuyl who also teaches keyboard at our school.

Last Friday our Girls Softball team ventured to Nabiac to play them in the 5th round of the NSW State Knockout Competition. We arrived to a ground very professionally set up, ready to go. After the first innings we were down 8-2 against a well drilled team from Nabiac. Our girls batted beautifully in the 2nd innings scoring 10 runs and limiting Nabiac to 4 runs, meaning the scores were tied at 12-12. Each team scored 2 runs in the 3rd innings, which forced a 4th innings to be played which our girls scored 7 runs to their 4. The final result being 21-18. It was a fantastic game with both teams playing in great spirit and sportsmanship. We sincerely thank Nabiac P.S. for their wonderful hospitality, especially the BBQ and drinks. Our team of Laura, Neve, Luka, Raeshel, Luci, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Charlie and Victoria played beautifully. Our coach, Di, was very proud of them, as were myself and Mrs Mahony (who now knows how to score in softball). We now await the winners of the Hunter 1 section for our next round.

Public Speaking Winner

Last Thursday, 16th August, our School Captain, Luka won the Regional Final for the NSW Multicultural Public Speaking Competition at Lambton P.S. She presented a prepared speech about "Community Spirit" where she focused on the community spirit which exists in the Woodville community. Each finalist then had to "endure" the impromptu speech section with the topic being " Nothing ventured, nothing gained" Luka did a wonderful job with this presentation, with one of the judges (there were three) saying it was the "best they had ever seen". The prepared and impromptu speeches have equal weightingwith the judges. The standard was very high as each student was the respective winner for their zone--Luka the winner for the Maitland Zone. There are about 300 public schools in the Hunter / Central Coast Region, so her effort in winning this competition was a wonderful achievement--and a great advertisement for small schools' education! She will now compete in the NSW State final in November at the ABC studios in Ultimo. We are very proud of her and wish her every success in the final.

Our students were wonderful ambassadors for our school at Star Struck. Not only did they dance beautifully, their behaviour was outstanding. All of the teachers who helped supervise the group commented on what a pleasure it was to be involved with such a fantastic group of students. Thank you to the families involved for allowing your children to be part of this great experience. Also a special thank you to Ms Tully for her great organisation, to Mrs Sheppard and Mrs Cameron for the costume making, and to Cassie for teaching our students the dance. Star Struck could not happen without everyone's commitment.

African Aid Foundation

Our school leaders have been busy over the last month selling raffle tickets for the African Aids Foundation. As a result of their efforts they have raised $495.15 which will be donated to our sister school "Ngunjini school" in Namibia. Many of our students have also been "entrepreneurs" of late, creating many bookmarks and craft to sell after school. They have initiated these activities all on their own, raising more money for the Bayleys to deliver to our sister school. The Bayleys are leaving for their trip very soon, so we have also been busy putting together school packs to deliver overseas including personal profile sheets about each child.

	Small School's Soccer Game

Our Paterson River Small School's team played very well last Friday, winning 3-0 against Vacy. This is our third year with our combined team (Paterson River being Mt Kanwary, Hinton and Iona).

This was our first win as the combined team so it was an historic victory! Laura is the captain, and she led by example scoring 2 goals. Our other team members were Tim, Harry, Liam, Bethany and Charlotte. We trained as a team yesterday, with Tracey our coach, in preparation for our next game against Paterson, tomorrow at Wallalong. We wish them more good luck in this game.

No-Wrap Day

On Tuesday 22nd May, (Week 5), we are having a no-wrap day again. The goal for the day is that we will place absolutely no food wrappings in our bins for the whole day. This means we bring all food to school in re-usable, washable containers and use no glad wrap, paper or foil. The day contributes to children's awareness that we can make choices in our everyday lives which benefit our planet. It can also save families money, as pre-packaged, pre-wrapped food is often much more expensive than home-made snacks and meals, or food taken from large packets and placed in appropriate single serve reusable containers. Please help us and support this initiative next week.

This is a wonderful achievement for a very talented player—she will be playing for this region later this term in Sydney. At the same trials, Laura reached the possible V probables stage, just missing out on selection herself.

Siena performed beautifully yesterday at the Regional Swimming Trials held in Maitland, qualifying for the State Swimming Championships in 3 events, being held in Sydney at the end of this term. She has qualified in backstroke, butterfly and her 11 yrs 50 m freestyle. She did this depsite having a touch of the flu, hindering her breathing whilst swimming. What a great effort from a very talented athlete. We wish her every success at Homebush, enjoying the ambience of the Olympic pool against the best swimmers in the state.

As most of the Iona Public School community already know, our School Administration Manager, Mrs Jill Crow, passed away over the weekend after a strong battle with lymphoma cancer. Mrs Crow was well loved by everyone in our school community, especially the children, so she will be very sadly missed as the "face of the school" in the front office.

Her funeral will be held at the Woodville Church this Thursday at 10.30 am, followed by refreshments provided by the Iona and Largs P&C in the Woodville Hall next to the school. Please join us celebrate Jill's life with her family on Thursday.

On behalf of the staff of Iona P.S. we wish a happy Christmas and positive new year to everyone. We would like to thank all our families for all the support they have given us this year, assisting us in providing such a wonderful year for all our children. I would also like to thank all our supporting staff for helping us out over the last few weeks whilst Mrs Crow has been quite ill in hospital. Debbie Collins, Alison Mahony, Gillian Manning and Diane Murphy have ensured all the administration duties have continued along quite smoothly. Let's hope Mrs Crow's health improves over the Christmas break--our thoughts and prayers are certainly with her and her family. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2012.

Congratulations to Luka and Drew who were elected today as our new School Captains for 2012. Also, congratulations to Elizabeth who was elected as our inaugural Student Council President for next year. Each Year 5 student presented a speech this morning outlining who they were and what they had to offer. The presentations were outstanding, making the whole process of voting very difficult. Each child from Kindergarten to Year 5 voted, as did the staff, using a preferential voting system where everyone could nominate their top three votes. One teacher commented that it was the most difficult decision she has encountered in all her years of teaching--a testimony to the quality of candidates that was on display.

Our forest area is now looking fantastic, thanks to the wonderful parents and community members who worked so tirelessly and diligently on Friday morning, whipper snipping, mowing, removing dead trees, mulching, bark chipping, weeding and planting. It is a wonderful testament to this community that we can work together and take pride in our school in such a way. The morning tea provided by Debbie and the BBQ organised by Melisa and Di was enjoyed by all. Some photos have been included in our gallery section.

Our school debating team continued their success on Wednesday against Paterson, winning their debate, successfully arguing that "All Australians should NOT save water". The winning team of Drew, Elizabeth, Luka and team advisor Neve did a great job demonstrating excellent public speaking and debating skills. They have continued on from the success of the debating team, which also includes Jantze and Raeshel. Their next debate will be against Vacy in the next few weeks.

Our Walkathon on Friday, 1st July (last day of term) went beautifully. The organisation by our P&C was wonderful, with many activities enjoyed by all the children throughout the afternoon. The rain fortunately stayed away, allowing everyone to enjoy walking around the bottom playground, across the new bridge into the "forest" and pass the ball, balance, skip, crawl through obstacles, shoot baskets and eat cheesels from a string--all good fun. At the completion of the walkathon everyone enjoyed watching a "farewell DVD" from the McAvoys which we will endeavour put on to our website. It is sad to see such a lovely family leaving us for the mid north coast--we certainly wish them a happy time up north. The prizes were handed out, ice blocks and cake "gobbled up" and their end of semester one reports given out! The whole school community should be proud of their efforts, with a host of parents attending and helping out for the afternoon. As a result, over $1600 has been raised for the school--a fantastic effort! We will include some photos of the day early next term.

On behalf of the staff at the school, we wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone next term.

Woodville Hall

Woodville Hall future

As most locals are aware, there has been a lot of work done at the local Woodville Hall over the last few years. The most obvious has been the renovated kitchen, painting inside, water tank, new awning, new wiring throughout the hall and currently, a brand new roof being fitted to the hall building.

All this work is making this iconic building a wonderful resource for everyone, particularly those who live in the Woodville area. It is also a great resource to the school for concerts, practices, rainy days and visiting shows, especially as it sits next door to the school.

Over the years, the school has always been a part of the organising committee and will continue to do so, but it does take some time and effort to do so,

Without the continuing efforts of the current organising committee--Alison Cox, Janine Thompson and Wayne Patfield, our hall would be a dilapidated, unusable building. They have sourced the funding (many thousands of dollars) through some expert and tireless submissions (these do take some work and time) and ensured the works have been carried out. Wayne, in particular, has spent many hours ensuring all these works are completed including dismantling the old kitchen, tiling, painting, mowing the lawn, being there for the builders, electricians, painters..all tradesman, any day of the week. He has had to see neighbours to seek their approval, and ensure all works are not disturbing anyone. He does this "for the love of it" so we all owe him a debt of gratitude!

The committee is getting tired and they are looking for some extra support. We hope everyone can consider spending some time ensuring all their work can continue--if we have enough support, it is not a big job at all--it's only big because it is left to a few!! If you are interested, please see the school or talk to Alison at the Woodville Store.

3 photos of the hall are in the album section.

The school is now "back on track" after the recent floods. We must thank everyone for their patience and support last Thursday and Friday when the school was closed. The playground is gradually drying out but it is all looking good. We have attached some photos taken last Saturday (taken after the peak floods from Thursday so it was much higher) by Ms Bath. As a result of everyone's support and generosity we raised around $530.00. With this money, one family can be provided the following:

A goat ($40.00); Clean drinking water ($60.00); A toilet ($80.00); Train a teacher ($125.00); A donkey ($225.00). The team did themselves proud as many of them don't play regular soccer.

Hockey victory

Our hockey girls (Neve, Laura and Drew) teamed with the Paterson team to defeat Telarah P.S. in the 2nd round of the State knockout competition 1-0 What a great effort--well done girls!

Newsflash! Our Debating team won their first debate of the year against Gresford P.S. arguing that "All Government buildings should NOT recycle!" They presented themselves very well with excellent supporting arguments. It is a worry that by the time we finished the debate we started believing what we were saying! Congratulations to Luka, Elizabeth, Drew and Jantze. We also sincerely thank Gresford P.S. for also debating beautifully and for hosting us in their beautiful school.
